grandparents, dragons, and probabilities
What is the probability I can attend a reception for grandparents at 6pm at Lamar and 35th, and make to a movie about dragons on Alamo South Lamar by 7:05pm?
P&P2
I was super tired last night and fell asleep after reading 4.5 pages of Pride and Prejudice (P&P). Actually I’m going to be really busy for the next week… but that’s okay, because I figure that if I just read 4.5 pages everyday until next Friday, and then starting next Friday I read 34.5 pages each night, that I should be able to finish the book in time for the book club (now...
Pride and Pejudice
Pride and Prejudice is 292 pages long. I have 15 days to read it for the Jane Austen book club. How many pages do I need to read each day in order to make sure I finish it in time? Also, on a related note, does anyone have a copy of the Cliff’s Notes for Pride and Prejudice?
t-shirts
I paid $10 a shirt for 200 running shirts. At a race I sold 1 for $20 each, and 2 for $30. After the race I had $780, and 151 shirts left. How many shirts did I sell for $20 and how many shirts did I sell for $15?
Bonus:
If I reduced the price of all shirts to $15, how many more shirts would I need to sell to break even?

ugh... this week
This week is really really stressful. I have so much stuff to do! I had to take a Calculus test on Tuesday (which, much to my dismay, I did NOT make 100% on because I made some really stupid mistakes), I have to grade a bajillion homework assignments and tests, and worst of all I have to write progress reports. Writing progress reports means I have to write a paragraph about each of my students. I...
geometry
we have a test tomorrow in geometry. there’s also one in stats and calculus… it just happens to be a good math testing day.
finally!
It’s Friday! Whoo! Woohoo!! Woohoohoo!!!
I’ve been waiting for Friday all week. I’m giving a quiz in both my classes just to celebrate. I love Friday quiz days. The students are quiet and working, but not too stressed out. Also quizzes are usually pretty easy to grade. Here are sample questions from both my quizzes:
Algebra 1:
Solve and graph
2(x-4) - 3x > 16
Geometry:

monday morning riddle
This is a riddle that a student told me last week:
All numbers lead to 4. 4 is 4 is 4 is 4 is 4 is 4…
Give me any number and I can show you how it ends at 4.
eg: 7 is 5 is 4 (is 4 is 4….)
here’s another example: 21 is 9 is 4 (is 4 is 4…)
What’s the pattern?
Feel free to ask me any number to help you crack this one.
running with ike
Here is a new problem:
Hur-shiu went running this morning at town lake at a pace of 11 min/mile for 38.5 minutes. She drove home and ran for another hour at a pace of 10 min/mile. How far did she run in all this morning?
By the way, Ike was an okay running partner. There was no rain, and a little wind kept things cool and interesting. I’m sorry to hear that Ike is not as pleasant in other...
Queen
I love Queen. Especially their song, “Don’t Stop Me Now”. I was really trying to make this picture my profile picture, but messed up and made it a post… so here it is. My first post… about Queen.
My Algebra 1 students are taking a test right now, so send them some good juju. It’s about solving one variable linear equations. Here’s an example:
